PEEP Turns Trusted Browsers Into Persistent Command Centers

Researchers have documented PEEP, a post-compromise toolkit that injects a malicious extension into Chrome and Edge profiles. Once established, it can steal browser information, manipulate web content and use a native messaging component to execute commands on the underlying operating system.

A newly analyzed toolkit called PEEP demonstrates how a trusted browser can become a powerful post-compromise platform. Disguised as a bookmarks extension, the malware can be inserted directly into Chrome or Edge profiles while bypassing normal marketplace installation checks and user approval prompts.

PEEP is not described as an initial-access tool. An attacker must already possess administrative privileges or another form of code execution on the target. That limitation is significant, but it does not make the framework harmless. After another intrusion method establishes access, PEEP can provide persistence, browser surveillance, session theft and remote control from inside software that users and security products normally trust.

From extension to endpoint backdoor

The malicious extension periodically contacts command infrastructure for instructions and can collect browsing history, cookies, open tabs, active addresses, clipboard contents and other contextual information. It can also inject JavaScript or alter pages viewed by the victim, creating opportunities for credential theft and transaction manipulation.

A companion native messaging executable extends those capabilities beyond the browser sandbox. Through this bridge, an operator can run shell commands, manage files and examine processes or services on the host. Installation scripts manipulate browser preference files, registry settings and enterprise extension policies to keep the extension enabled.

The toolkit appears to build on an open-source red-team framework, illustrating the recurring problem of legitimate security technology being repurposed for malicious operations. Researchers also found signs of planned Linux support, although the available evidence did not establish the scale or identity of real-world victims.

Defensive priorities

  • Audit forced browser-extension policies and investigate extensions that are not approved centrally.
  • Monitor changes to Chrome and Edge preference files, external extension manifests and native messaging registrations.
  • Inspect unusual PowerShell activity associated with browser profile directories.
  • Revoke browser sessions and authentication tokens during incident response.
  • Rebuild heavily compromised endpoints rather than assuming extension removal is sufficient.

I believe PEEP highlights a visibility gap between endpoint and browser security. Many organizations monitor downloaded files and new executables closely but give less attention to browser policy changes and native messaging components. Security teams should treat the browser as an application platform with access to valuable identities, not simply as a tool for viewing websites.
